Why Visit the Brighton Royal Pavilion?

The Royal Pavilion at Brighton is a perfect architectural example of the eccentric personality and tastes of 19th-century King George IV. His love of Oriental decor and trends can be seen here, from the Indo-Saracenic revival architecture of the palace itself, to the Chinese porcelain; furniture designed to look like bamboo; and wallpaper, carpets and lamps depicting dragons and lotus flowers. Meticulously restored to its original splendour over the years, the former royal residence is filled with details and references to Asia.

The pavilion's carefully curated regency-style gardens make for an excellent introduction to the palace complex. Inside, you'll not only discover the 18th- and 19th-century history of the estate, but you'll also be able to commemorate the impact left by the First World War on Brighton and on the United Kingdom as a whole. The Royal Pavilion itself served as a hospital during the war, when its elaborate music rooms, where high society would once dance the night away, were instead filled with nurses caring for the wounded.
